At the very top of Georgia in the North Georgia Mountains, lies a secluded area of about 329 square miles with some 21,000 residents called Union County, Georgia. The area that would become Union County in 1832 was initially occupied solely by Native Americans until the discovery of gold in the 1820s caused a huge increase in popularity among more and more white settlers. Being established decades before the American Civil War, Union County was not named out of sympathy for the Union, which is a common belief. Union County delegate’s voted against the secession of Georgia. Although Union County residents were primarily Confederate sympathizers, many supported the Union. As a result of such a varied population, Union County is the only county in the south to have a war memorial dedicated to Confederate and Union Soldiers as well as Native American Warriors.
Although small, the Union County School System offers some of Georgia’s highest rated public schools. Most Union County students enroll in such notable Union County schools as:
